Edexcel IGCSE (O Level) English Language

(a) Subject choice / option

4EBO   English Language Specification B

(b) Subject / Paper Description

A three hour themed paper made of three sections:

Section  A –  Comprehension  (two or Three passages on a related subject / topic but may be different in text Audience, Purpose and Narrative Technique).

Students read passages for understanding meanings and questions are asked on  identification of ideas, contextual meanings of words and expressions, as well as  comparisms of passages  on features of texts and sub-texts.

Care must be shown in answering ‘own word’ questions not to copy directly from the passages.

Practising past papers is of immense help for this section.  Practise spending 40 – 45 minutes in this section.

Section  B – Directed writing  (single compulsory writing task).  This section is writing according to   guide lines and requires using materials only from a passage or passages but writing   for a different audience and purpose.  Marks are gained for appropriate language and   style to the audience of the writing task:  a letter, an article, a speech, a dialogue, a leaflet, a diary entry etc.

Avoid:

  • Lifting portions of the passage(s) in your directed writing
  • Using personal experience or ideas from your readings not found in the passage(s).
  • Directed writing is a form of summary and no marks are rewarded for additional materials not found in the passage(s).
  • Do not spend more than one hour in this section

Section  C – Essay  (An optional section of three questions to answer one).  Spend about an hour in this section.

  • Students are expected to write more lucidly on a topic using their imagination, experience or reading in this 400 word length essay.
  • Avoid using materials or basing your essay on the comprehension passage(s) though   you may use a central idea from the passage(s).
  • Questions may be on :  Narrative Description, Argumentative, Speech, article etc.

    • Similarities between  Section B and C

Both essays are similarly assessed on : content of essay, organization (appropriate lay-out, paragraphing, paragraph linkages, etc), use of appropriate expression and style of writing task (use of appropriate detail, clarity and coherence in expressions) and mechanical Accuracy (use and variety of punctuation marks, spellings, verb tense, subject and verb agreement, capitalization etc).
